About Yoga Village UK
The Yoga Village UK website was launched on 1st December 1999 by Andrea Newman to serve and connect the yoga community in the UK. Yoga Village UK was re-created and updated to modern standards in December 2011.
Yoga Village UK continues to be dedicated to furthering the practice of yoga in the UK and to support everyone who strives to grow in yoga, whatever yoga path they choose to follow.
The new site 2011
The new site came online in December 2011. We have kept elements of the old version of the site, and kept it clear and simple, without bells and whistles. There are more than 800 yoga teachers listed in the Yoga Village Teachers Directory.
We have pruned other areas of the site right down, taken off some parts that weren’t really being used, reinstated the Noticeboard which will be a place for notices and classified ads, and rearranged the furniture slightly for ease of use. We have even taken most of the books out of the bookshop and have decided to build that up again from scratch. Book Review Editor Tracey Roberts looks forward to receiving recommendations from website visitors.
We are excited to see how the website will evolve. The way it evolves depends on the feedback we receive from the users of the site. We welcome your participation in this development.
Business things
Yoga Village UK is a non-profit-making website. There is a lot of work involved in setting up and running a large national website, and much of this is done on a voluntary basis.
There are fees for some advertising to cover some of the costs, but these are kept as low as possible. The amount and type of advertising on the website is limited to keep it easy to use and to maintain its clear and simple appearance. We request a voluntary annual subscription from teachers listed in the Teachers Directory to support the running of the site. For more information click here.
Our aim for the future is to get to a point where the website is self-sufficient and doesn’t rely as much on voluntary work to keep it running. Your financial contributions are greatly appreciated.
Yoga Village UK or Yoga UK?
Our trading name is Yoga UK which we use for the url of the site and cheque payments as it’s shorter and quicker to write! But we feel that the full name Yoga Village UK reflects better the ethos of the site, which is to develop the sense of community amongst yoga practitioners in the UK.
Information on the site
Included on the site are details of yoga teachers and organisations in the UK who wish to publicise their work and activities in the field of yoga and who welcome enquiries from others.
A listing of any teacher or organisation on this website does not imply endorsement by Yoga Village UK. However any listing or advertisement which we feel to be inappropriate for a website of this nature will be refused or removed.
We accept information from individuals in good faith, and we cannot guarantee that information presented here is correct - please make your own enquiries. If you find any information on the website to be incorrect please let us know so that we can amend it accordingly.
Our connection with Amazon
Accessing the Amazon website via Yoga Village UK costs you nothing, but we receive a small commission. We also have a bookshop on the website which links directly to Amazon. So if you are going to use Amazon to buy books, or indeed anything else, if you go via the Amazon link on Yoga Village UK you will be supporting the site at no cost to yourself.
A message from the Editor
The internet, although on the one hand allows easy contact with many people, it also creates increasing isolation as electronic connection is always less meaningful and life-affirming than personal face-to-face interaction.
An important part of the practice of yoga is being able to meet with and learn from other yogis and teachers in person. The aim of the Yoga Village UK website is to use the wonderful medium of the internet to put yoga people in the UK in touch with each other - internet interactions hopefully leading to fruitful meetings and enlightening friendships.
Yoga Village UK is a growing and evolving site and we try to adapt to the changing needs of yogis and internet users as the years go by. I am keen to know how Yoga Village UK can help you as a yoga practitioner or teacher. What information could be included on the site that would be helpful to you? If you have any comments or suggestions on how the site could be developed to serve you better, please do get in touch. I’d love to hear from you.
I would like to thank Jenna Lang, Caroline Newman, Lynn Shore, Terry Bruce, Sue Grierson and Eugene Mulligan for their invaluable contributions to the running of Yoga Village UK, and to those of you who assisted with the launch of the new version of the site in 2011. Much love and thanks.
I hope that you find your visit to this website both useful and helpful, and that you will come again! Please do put a link to Yoga Village UK at www.yogauk.com on your own website if you have one.
Shanti om.
Andrea
